Sept 7 (Reuters) - Drilling and construction services provider Layne Christensen posted a rise in quarterly profit on strong sales at its mineral exploration business.

The company provides drilling, water treatment and construction services to customers such as municipalities, water utilities, global mining companies, heavy civil construction contractors, and oil and gas producers.

Over the years, water infrastructure has been the biggest revenue generator for the company, but the company expects this division to continue to be pressured, with a weak economy weighing on municipal spending.

The mineral exploration division, the company's second-largest unit, posted a 35.9 percent rise in revenue.

Second-quarter profit rose to $10.6 million, or 54 cents per share, compared with $6.5 million, or 33 cents per share last year.

Revenue of the company, rose 16.5 percent to $295 million.

Shares of the company closed at $25.75 on Tuesday on Nasdaq. (Reporting by Swetha Gopinath in Bangalore; Editing by Joyjeet Das)

Sony estimates FY 2010/11 net loss, revises from profit

birou notarial

TOKYO | Mon May 23, 2011 4:41am EDT

TOKYO May 23 (Reuters) - Sony on Monday changed its earnings estimate for the year to March 2011 to a net loss of 260 billion yen ($3.2 billion) from a profit of 70 billion, in the company's first indication of the financial impact of the devastating March earthquake and tsunami.

The company maintained its estimate of an operating profit of 200 billion yen, which compares with analysts' consensus of 197 billion yen, according to a SmartEstimate by ThomsonReuters I/B/E/S. SmartEstimates place additional weight on recent forecasts by top-rated analysts.

The maker of Bravia televisions and Vaio computers is set to announce its January-March earnings on Thursday.

Sony factories in northeastern Japan were among those damaged in the March 11 disaster, which also snarled the electronics industry's supply chain and triggered a plunge in domestic consumption.

Many of Sony's rivals, including Panasonic Corp , have yet to issue forecasts for the current financial year to March 2012, due to lingering uncertainty over the effects of the quake. ($1 = 81.710 Japanese Yen) (Reporting by Isabel Reynolds; Editing by Edmund Klamann)

UPDATE 2-AkzoNobel price hikes lift profit, promises more

birou notarial

* EBITDA 437 mln euros vs forecast 416 mln

* Sales up 16 pct to 3.76 bln euros vs forecast 3.56 bln

* Says confident it can pass on higher raw materials costs

(Recasts lead, adds details)

By Aaron Gray-Block

AMSTERDAM, April 21 (Reuters) - Dutch chemicals group AkzoNobel (AKZO.AS) pledged more price rises to offset higher metals and oil-based raw materials costs as it lifted first quarter core profit 10 percent and kept its full-year forecast.

"We do have pricing power and are able to use our brands and market positions to do this. We are committed to an unchaged outlook," Chief Financial Officer Keith Nichols told reporters.

Nichols said raw materials prices were up 15 percent year-on-year, more than expected, and he did not see input costs easing in the near term.

ABN AMRO analyst Mark van der Geest said AkzoNobel's results were "very strong", backed by volume growth at decorative paints in Europe and the company's new contract to supply U.S. retail giant Walmart (WMT.N).

"Fasten your seatbelts, AkzoNobel has lift off," he said, pointing also to higher volumes at AkzoNobel's specialty chemicals unit.

The world's biggest paint company had earnings before interest, tax, depreciation and amortisation (EBITDA) excluding one-offs of 437 million euros, up 10 percent, and ahead of the average forecast of 416 million from a Reuters poll.

Group margins fell slightly year-on-year as the company's decorative paints and performance coatings units had EBITDA in line with forecasts, but the specialty chemicals unit beat forecasts. Margins rose quarter-on-quarter.

Quarterly sales rose 16 percent to 3.76 billion euros, due to 7 percent volume growth and 4 percent price rises, beating the average forecast of 3.56 billion and ahead of its target of 5 percent revenue and EBITDA growth for the full year.

AkzoNobel is facing higher costs for raw materials such as titanium dioxide, which is used as a paint pigment, metals and oil-related materials for resins due to the crisis in Libya.

United States rivals PPG (PPG.N) and Sherwin-Williams (SHW.N) had already forecast strong quarterly earnings due to price hikes, improved demand and cost cuts. Both firms will report later on Thursday. [ID:nSGE70I0DF] [ID:nN30122809] (Reporting by Aaron Gray-Block; Editing by Sara Webb and David Cowell)

UPDATE 1-Li & Fung '10 net at record but lags f'casts, eyes higher profit

birou notarial

* H2 profit falls short of expectations

* Sets 3-year target to raise core op profit by 50 pct

* Shares down 0.23 pct before announcement, lags market (Adds details of results, analyst quotes)

By Donny Kwok and Michelle Chen

HONG KONG, March 24 (Reuters) - Consumer goods exporter Li & Fung posted a record profit for 2010 and set an ambitious plan for the coming three-years to actively expand its sourcing network to rake in higher profits.

The manager of supply chains for retailers including Wal-Mart Stores Inc and Target Corp faced challenges over the past few years as consumer demand in the key markets of Europe and the U.S. remained slack for the most part.

But U.S. consumer demand started recovering late last year, providing a boost to its results.

For 2010, the company posted a record net profit of HK$4.28 billion, lower than a consensus forecast of HK$5.03 billion, but higher than HK$3.37 billion for 2009.

For the July-December period, Li & Fung's net profit hit HK$2.11 billion ($270 million) as per Reuters' calculation based on the full-year earnings figures.

That compared with HK$1.97 billion for the same period in 2009 but lagged a mean profit forecast of HK$2.86 billion, according to Thomson Reuters I/B/E/S.

Li & Fung unveiled its new three-year plan in the earnings statement, aiming to achieve core operating profit of $1.5 billion by 2013, 50 percent higher than the $1 billion in the previous three-year plan.

"We expect that the European onshore business will track the development pattern of U.S. onshore business very closely and actively grow via acquisition during this plan period," the company said in a filing to the Hong Kong stock exchange.

Analysts had expected that a number of businesses Li & Fung bought lately, such as UK-based private-label supplier Visage Group and Jimlar Corp, would contribute to sales and earnings in second half of 2010.

They also see the exporter's $1 billion war chest for acquisitions driving earnings growth in the next two years.

The company's shares closed down 0.23 percent at HK$42.95 on Thursday, ahead of the results. They are down 3.8 percent so far this year, against the broader market's 0.06 percent decline. (Reporting by Donny Kwok and Michelle Chen; Editing by Muralikumar Anantharaman and Ken Wills)
