* FTSE 100 index up 2.1 percent, extending rally

* Miners, energy issues lead gainers as commodity prices rise

* Randgold Resources weak as gold price drops

LONDON, Sept 7 (Reuters) - Britain's leading share index pushed higher on Wednesday morning, helped by strength in heavyweight commodity issues after base metal and crude oil prices rose on positive U.S. ISM data.

The FTSE 100 index was up 113.43 points, or 2.2 percent at 5,270.27 at 0808 GMT, adding to Tuesday's 1.1 percent rally. It had shed nearly 6 percent in the previous two sessions.

"The two strands remain of growth and debt. On the growth side there are some signs of progress being made, but on the debt side there remains a fragility in sentiment particularly for the euro zone," said Richard Hunter, Head of Equities at Hargreaves Lansdown Stockbrokers.

"The market has been taking a top down macro view at the moment, but on a selective bottom up approach there are some attractive stocks out there at the moment," Hunter said.

Integrated oils headed the blue chip gainers, supported by a 1 percent rise in the crude price CLc1 on demand hopes after Tuesday's U.S. non-manufacturing ISM report showed an unexpected acceleration.

BG Group added 3.5 percent. Its Indian unit is in talks with state-run Oil and Natural Gas Corp to acquire a stake in a gas block off the country's east coast.

BP added 3.2 percent helped by news its partner Chevron has made a deepwater discovery in the Gulf of Mexico at the Moccasin prospect in which BP has a 43.75 percent stake.

Oil services firm John Wood Group rose 4 percent, with traders saying the rally will not stop the stock being ousted from the FTSE 100 index at the latest quarterly review, due to take place after the close on Wednesday.

The review is based on closing prices from Tuesday's session, with Wood Group and private equity firm 3i Group both set for FTSE 100 demotion. Fund manager Ashmore Group and packaging firm Bunzl were set to take their places in the index.

Miners also lent their strength to the FTSE 100, lifted by stronger base metal prices.

Anglo American gained 2.4 percent. The global miner is interested in U.S. company Walter Energy , and said to be weighing an offer of $120 per share, the Times newspaper reported. BHP Billiton , up 1.6 percent was also said to be interested in Walter.

Precious metals miner Randgold Resources lost 1.3 percent, retreating with a 2 percent tumble by the spot gold price in Asian trade after heavy losses on U.S. gold futures on technical selling.

Imperial Tobacco shed 0.6 percent, having been a strong gainer on Tuesday, with Goldman Sachs downgrading its rating to "neutral" in a review of European consumer goods.

Ex-dividend factors accounted for the other two blue-chip fallers, with Diageo and Hargreaves Lansdown among a dozen FTSE 100 stocks trading without their payout attractions on Wednesday.

Citigroup's quantitative strategy rermained cautious.

"With many looking for a bottom in the market, we continue to monitor the price of risk. We reaffirm our stance that although our Low Risk portfolio is trading at a 30 percent premium to the market, we do not envisage a shift away from low risk in the absence of significant positive macro news," Citigroup strategists said in a note.

British house prices fell 1.2 percent in August, mortgage lender Halifax said. While prices were 2.6 percent lower in the three months to August compared to a year-ago, Halifax noted an improvement in the trend.

British industrial and manufacturing output figures will be released at 0830 GMT. (Editing by Dan Lalor)

REFILE-European shares edge higher; miners support

birou notarial

(Refiles to correct spelling of 'European' in headline)

LONDON May 24 (Reuters) - European shares drifted higher in early trade on Tuesday, with firmer metals prices supporting miners, although investor sentiment remained fragile on persistent concerns about the euro zone sovereign debt crisis.

That caution was compounded after Moody's gave a bearish assessment of the impact of a Greek debt restructuring. At 0714 GMT, the FTSEurofirst 300 .FTEU3 index of top European shares was up 0.2 percent at 1,118.72 points after falling 1.7 percent on Monday on mounting concerns about the euro zone debt crisis.

Analysts said longer-term outlook stayed positive, but short-term events could make equities volatile.

"The global economy is still doing well. Companies are very healthy and have a lot of cash in their balance sheets. As long as they continue to deliver profits, that's going to be helpful for the market," said Philippe Gijsels, head of research at BNP Paribas Fortis Global Markets in Brussels.

"But I would caution people to be careful and take some money off the table and make sure they have some cash in hands."

Miners got strength from higher metals prices. The STOXX Europe 600 Basic Materials index .SXPP rose 1.5 percent. (Reporting by Atul Prakash)

UPDATE 1-Li & Fung '10 net at record but lags f'casts, eyes higher profit

birou notarial

* H2 profit falls short of expectations

* Sets 3-year target to raise core op profit by 50 pct

* Shares down 0.23 pct before announcement, lags market (Adds details of results, analyst quotes)

By Donny Kwok and Michelle Chen

HONG KONG, March 24 (Reuters) - Consumer goods exporter Li & Fung posted a record profit for 2010 and set an ambitious plan for the coming three-years to actively expand its sourcing network to rake in higher profits.

The manager of supply chains for retailers including Wal-Mart Stores Inc and Target Corp faced challenges over the past few years as consumer demand in the key markets of Europe and the U.S. remained slack for the most part.

But U.S. consumer demand started recovering late last year, providing a boost to its results.

For 2010, the company posted a record net profit of HK$4.28 billion, lower than a consensus forecast of HK$5.03 billion, but higher than HK$3.37 billion for 2009.

For the July-December period, Li & Fung's net profit hit HK$2.11 billion ($270 million) as per Reuters' calculation based on the full-year earnings figures.

That compared with HK$1.97 billion for the same period in 2009 but lagged a mean profit forecast of HK$2.86 billion, according to Thomson Reuters I/B/E/S.

Li & Fung unveiled its new three-year plan in the earnings statement, aiming to achieve core operating profit of $1.5 billion by 2013, 50 percent higher than the $1 billion in the previous three-year plan.

"We expect that the European onshore business will track the development pattern of U.S. onshore business very closely and actively grow via acquisition during this plan period," the company said in a filing to the Hong Kong stock exchange.

Analysts had expected that a number of businesses Li & Fung bought lately, such as UK-based private-label supplier Visage Group and Jimlar Corp, would contribute to sales and earnings in second half of 2010.

They also see the exporter's $1 billion war chest for acquisitions driving earnings growth in the next two years.

The company's shares closed down 0.23 percent at HK$42.95 on Thursday, ahead of the results. They are down 3.8 percent so far this year, against the broader market's 0.06 percent decline. (Reporting by Donny Kwok and Michelle Chen; Editing by Muralikumar Anantharaman and Ken Wills)
